The Grünfeld is a hypermodern defense: Black allows White to occupy the center with pawns, then attacks it with pieces and the …c5 break. The g7-bishop is the star, raking the long diagonal. Dynamic and theory-heavy, it was a cornerstone of Fischer’s and Kasparov’s repertoires.
